Solid Edge - How to control the modeling paradigm when importing foreign data
1. Open Solid Edge to the start-up screen.

2. From the File menu > Settings, select the Solid Edge Options.

3. Under the Helpers tab, set the “Start Part and Sheet Metal documents using the environment:” option to Ordered, if you want to import the file into and ordered paradigm. (Alternately, set the “Start Part and Sheet Metal documents using the environment:” option to Synchronous, if you want to import the file into and synchronous paradigm.)

Note: This has to be preset before opening the file. If you already have the imported file opened in Solid Edge, changing this setting will have no effect on the opened file.
4. Click OK, to close the Solid Edge Options. Select the File menu > Open > Browse.

5. From the Open File dialog, select the type of file you want to import.

6. Browse to the file location and highlight the file you want to import.

7. Click on the “Options…” button if you wish to change the default import options.

- Modify the options as needed then click OK.

8. Click “Open”, in the Open File dialog, to launch the import process.

9. Select the Part or Sheet Metal template that you want to use from either the User, General, or More tab, in the “New” dialog, and then click OK.

10. When the import is complete, make sure you Fit the view because the part may not have been created around (0,0,0). The imported part should now be opened in the paradigm that you selected in step 3.
