Solid Edge - what is Solid Edge X
Using Solid Edge X
Solid Edge X is Solid Edge delivered as software as a service (SaaS) with cloud-based tools to enhance collaboration, improve accessibility, and simplify license management. Solid Edge X supports named-user licensing, which requires users to sign in with registered credentials before starting the product. You do not need to learn a unique user interface or additional Solid Edge commands to use Solid Edge X.
Installing and starting Solid Edge X
A named-user license is required to install and run Solid Edge X. Licensing information is available in the Solid Edge Installation and Licensing guide, sesetup.pdf, accessible in Siemens Support Center.
The Solid Edge X application is installed from Siemens Software Center.
When you start Solid Edge X, you are directed to the Solid Edge X Log In dialog box to sign in from your browser.

After supplying your credentials, your browser displays a message indicating successful log-in. Then, Solid Edge starts using the assigned license, which can be viewed in the About Solid Edge dialog box.
Working with Solid Edge X
When you are licensed to use Solid Edge X, the Solid Edge features that work with named-user licenses are enabled. You use the same commands that you normally would in Solid Edge and the user interface automatically adjusts to provide access to:
- Your avatar in the application title bar of the window. Typically, your avatar uses your initials based on your first and last name.
- The user profile menu. When you click your avatar, you access the user profile menu that enables you to view your Enterprise Cloud Account (ECA) ID, manage installations, receive notifications regarding software update availability, and notices of new content in Discovery Center.
- When new information is available in Discovery Center, or when new software updates are available, a red dot is displayed on your avatar.
- On the user profile menu, clicking:
- New content available in Discovery Center takes you to Discovery Center where you can view the new information.
- Software update available takes you to Siemens Software Center where you can install the update.
The red dot is dismissed after you view the information in Discovery Center or update Solid Edge X to the latest version. - If no software updates are available or no new content is available in Discovery Center, the Notifications section of the profile is empty.
- The Log out command.
If you are signed in to more than one application, your browser displays the option to explicitly select the application to log out, or you can log out of all applications.
Running concurrent sessions
As a Solid Edge X user, you can start multiple sessions on the same machine. However, each Windows session is considered a separate device login.
To log into Solid Edge X on a different device, you must first log out from the previous device. Logging into another device without first logging out of the previously used one results in a notification that the maximum number of allowed devices is reached. You are given the option to transfer your entitlement from one device to another, and a user on the original device will receive a message indicating the transfer request has been made. Solid Edge X will close, giving the user an opportunity to save any unsaved documents.
Solid Edge X and value-based token licenses
Solid Edge X is available for use with value-based token licensing for add-on products such as Solid Edge XpresRoute, Solid Edge Electrical Routing, and Solid Edge Simulation.
Value-based (or token) licenses enable you to use a wide variety of products through a system of tokens that are compatible with, and extend, existing licensing options. Tokens are enabled on top of your base seat license and are available for floating licenses on a subscription basis.
After purchasing a fixed number of tokens, you can apply the tokens toward the use of any token-enabled product if you do not exceed the combined token count purchased. When you exit Solid Edge, the tokens are released and made available to other users.
Working offline
Under certain circumstances, you may be required to work without access to the internet. You can continue to use Solid Edge X even when you are disconnected from the internet, provided your logged-in session or token is valid. However, if they are not already checked out, you will not be able to access value-based licenses or high-value add-on products.
When you are disconnected from the internet, your avatar changes to indicate you are working offline.
After 24 hours without internet access, a message is displayed indicating your license is no longer valid and you are given the opportunity to save any unsaved documents before Solid Edge X closes.
Logging out of Solid Edge X
As a named user of Solid Edge X, you can close Solid Edge without logging out. When you want to log out from Solid Edge X so that you can log in as a different user or log in from a different device, click your avatar and select Log out.
If you are logged into more than one application, logging out closes Solid Edge and starts your browser so you can select the application from which to log out, or you can select to log out from all applications.
When Solid Edge X is the only application, you are logged into from the browser, logging out from the application logs you out from the browser and you do not have to explicitly log out from the browser.
